Simple Nourishment: Egg Drop Soup

I love to cook. I have daydreams about being a grandma and having nothing to do all day but cook for myself and my grand kids… right out of that garden I will finally have time to weed…

It can be difficult to find simple, staple recipes, that can be made pretty quickly, follow Ayurvedic ‘rules’ and are also yummy.  I can cook almost anything – and when I say that, I mean, yes, I have learned to follow a recipe, but what I mean is that I take pride making a meal out of whatever I have around the kitchen.

EGGDROP

It pays to have staples that you love to use and that you know are balancing for you and the season – this is something that just takes time, and of course, knowhow – otherwise have to get complicated to cook for yourself daily.

This recipe was created in mid-January, during a harsh winter, for someone with sensitive digestion, but in need of protein. If you’re going to choose animal protein, choose organic and local.  Even if you’re living in a city, it’s common to find out that your neighbor now has a hen house! (And yes, bonus, this recipe is gluten-free and milk-free!)

Simple Nourishment: Egg Drop Soup

Balances Vata (For a more Pitta balancing soup, remove the egg yolk and just use egg white, and go light or emit the black pepper and miso.)

INGREDIENTS
1 T ghee
2 local eggs
2 cups of water or broth of your choice
black pepper to taste
pinch turmeric (I can’t help myself)
1/2 zucchini chopped (happened to have on hand – any other greens, including scallion would be nice, and more traditional)
1 tsp miso paste
pinch salt

DIRECTIONS

Heat ghee over medium heat in a heavy bottomed pot.  Add zucchini or other greens and saute to coat with oil (if zucchini, cook for 2-3 minutes to soften.)  Add black pepper and turmeric and stir.  Add water or broth, and bring to a boil.  Meanwhile, whisk the eggs in a glass measuring cup until smooth.  Remove the pot from the heat, and then slowly whisk in the eggs.  Keep whisking, as this will give you ribbons of egg as opposed to chunks, which are less ‘nice’ to savor.

Serve immediately, with a tsp of miso per bowl. Add a pinch of salt if you need it.  Two small servings, or one larger.

Do you walk your talk? Let’s walk together (and save big money)

IMG_0701

“Working with Adena helped me to really walk my talk.  I am in the wellness industry and practicing what I preach can be tricky at times.  Adena has inspired me to create a morning and evening routine that support how I want to live.  She has guided me to a spacious place where it’s easier to hear and tend to my bodies needs.  Just being around Adena inspires one to want to take self-care to a whole new level.”Kate Read

I’ve learned from experience that it can ‘take a village’ to practice what I preach. In my last post, I rapped on sustainability.  What that means, and if that’s all we really want – because in reality, we want to feel that our lives and our health and our place on the planet is more than sustainable, but thriving!  And I gave a shout out to those of you in the health service industry (the industry I consider myself in, for sure!) because I want to let you in on my secrets – well, not secrets, but the tools from Ayurveda and Yoga I couldn’t live without.

It’s not as simple as telling you in a bullet-pointed blog post. It’s a journey – one I’ve been on for 5 years.  And it’s on-going. Never ending. Cyclical.  Deepening my connection with the natural world, and my body and mind, as I go.

Put your own oxygen mask on first

I went to a restorative yoga class last week, and the teacher used a metaphor I really like. She said, “There’s a reason the airline stewards ask you to put your own oxygen mask on first.”  That made me think.  Also to note, I was the only one in the class.  And I stayed, and I didn’t worry about any awkwardness, I just stayed as present as possible, because I had invested the time and money in myself, and knew it was what I needed at that time.

Also, I have been many, many times, and teacher to one yoga student – whether private or not-intended-to-be private classes.  I understand where the teacher is coming from, and how she might feel.  And that whether it’s one person or 40, most of her energy does not come from talking, or teaching, but from holding the space.

Does that resonate with you?  Where do you feel like you spend most of your energy working with clients?  Holding space is what comes to me, in my work. Whether it’s for a yoga class, a massage, or an Ayurvedic consultation, your attention and presence is what can be the most taxing – but of course, is also the most important for the healing of your client.  Your allowing for that to happen, just by creating the loving container.

Self healing and self realization

I work mostly with women – and it happens to be mostly women who are massage therapists, yoga teachers, and health coaches these days.  We are natural caregivers.  The women I work with usually have one thing in common – they are giving more than their reserves allow.  Much of the imbalance we’re tapping into Ayurveda to use for their healing is about nourishment, replenishing those reserves, and building what we call ‘ojas,’  and balancing Vata dosha.

So many of us in the service industry that I meet, who are doing great healing service to others still struggle immensely with healing their own digestion problems and balancing stress levels. It can feel very hypocritical, on their part, for them to be helping others when they can not help themselves.

IMPORTANT: This is no place for guilt to come in – but action and self love.  I think (know) self-healing is super hard.  That’s why even with all the skills we might have, having guidance, and someone else to talk to and support you (save you from the tyranny of your own head…) is a necessity.

Clients can tell when we’re practicing what we preach – whether consciously, or in the subtle energies we’re putting out.  Or how affective our work really will be for them.  And how authentic and whole we will feel doing it.

We are social creatures, it is our nature.  We are influence by our environments, in so many ways.  Whether that’s eating with the seasons, due to those changes, astrology, or our mental tendencies when we’re around certain groups of people – make it easy on your self.

I’ve been seeking out connection with positive women over the past couple of years – it’s something that keeps me on my path, and helps me listen more strongly to what my own intuition is telling me.  And these are skills which are beneficial for all parts of living.

So basically, I want you. I need you.

To be part of my community.  To be together to support each other.  To have good conversation and explore the natural world through food, nourishment, rhythms of nature in relation to our own bodies.

If this resonates with where you are at right now, and you know you’re in need of self care and nourishment (and maybe want to do the double whammy and improve your business on multiple levels)  I want you to be a part of the Spring program, The Healing Diet.

Learn the invaluable skills of self care and healing digestion from Ayurveda, so you can show up with more authenticity in your work, because you feel better. And then share what you learn with your clients. It’s a new way of looking at nutrition. Supplement what you already know with the practical body wisdom found within.

Yoga teachers, health coaches, massage therapists, nutritionists, caregivers in all ways. I want YOU to thrive.  I know, if you’ve been scoping around – this is an investment of time and money.

So to help a bit, I’m giving a special one-time $200 discount when you register for The Healing Diet beginning March 8th.

I don’t know what I would do if I did not have the self care tools I have learned from Ayurveda.

Is your life sustainable?

My husband is taking a certification course here in Vermont this month in Sustainable Building and Design.  Sustainable is an idea we’re all hip to now – we’re encouraged to support sustainability in the environment, by buying organic food, etc.

At least that is what I first think of – FOOD.  Supporting sustainable agriculture, or farming, and recycling, as well as composting – the latter two things making me feel like I am hopefully making my life here on earth more sustainable…that Mother Earth can sustain herself for longer from the stress my lifestyle puts on her, I suppose, if I do these things.

image

Though his course is called Sustainable Building and Design, his teachers encouraged him to find a better word – striving for more than just sustainable.

He gave me this example, ‘If someone asked how our marriage was, would you say ‘sustainable?’  And that really made me think again about this word we tote around.  Do we want to just sustain the planet as it is now?  Or do things really need to improve around here?

Sustainable’s not enough.

Now the word seems like we’re just hoping for neutral (SIDE NOTE: This is often a realistic starting place, and we talk about this in The Healing Diet).  So…how can we be progressive?  What can we do to THRIVE?

Sticking with the example of my husband – his teachers are introducing him to permaculture.  Many of you might know what that means – but I didn’t .  Very basically, it’s using the laws or patterns found in nature in the most productive way possible.  In as many ways as possible, improving the natural strengths found within your environment.

It can be slower going than traditional agriculture.  First, one must simply observe.  For months, seasons, years even, to discover the patterns.

And then it’s time to take action, incorporating changes slowly, so they’ll stick.  And so then you’ll be informed on the next way to supplement the pattern in the best way.  The fruit might be months away, or even years.

Luckily, in Ayurveda, the fruit comes faster than that.  The human body is incredibly resilient.  So as you can see, I found so many parallels in this model to what it takes to upgrade to an Ayurvedic lifestyle.  To a better diet.  To a better relationship with yourself, and food choices.

All we are is another manifestation nature.

We just need to learn and observe the patterns in our own bodies. To connect with the rhythms of nature within ourselves.  Then we can take action!

And what I love about Ayurveda is that there are direct action steps to self healing and making change.  For changing your state of mind.  For working with your metabolism, and not against it.  For thriving as a human being, not just ‘sustaining.’  (Though, again, sustaining is better than sinking, loves, it’s okay if you’re in need of a raising up! It’s important to start where you are – in fact, it’s the only place you CAN start!)

Are you in the service industry?

I want to hear from you.  Do you feel like your life is sustainable right now? Is your stress level sustainable?  Do you give out more than you’re taking in?

If you’re a health coach, massage therapist, yoga teacher – you are a care giver – serving others is your dharma. You need to be thriving, not just surviving to hold space for your clients healing.  If you’re interested in studying Ayurveda (to take YOUR health to the next level – and possibly your clients!) I want you in this Spring’s The Healing Diet.  And I’m giving a big discount to you in my next newsletter.  If you apply today, you’ll can still get it – just be sure to let me know what kind of care -giver you are!

Do you walk your talk?  I’ll share my experiences with this…next time.

Love,

Uproot the Cause of Disease by Changing your Diet

Imagine:

You feel balanced, nourished and confident.

You start your day on the right foot, and are less stressed.

You feel light and energized after lunch instead of sluggish and bloated.

I knew the crux of natural healing was deeply connected with what I chose to eat.  What I didn’t realize was that the how and when is the defining factor when it comes to using food as medicine.
I look forward to the changing seasons, and naturally feel my cravings changing, and know how to adjust my diet to these subtle shifts. I used to catch everything that was going around, and now I rarely catch a cold.  I’m more in tune with my body, and I know how to make choices to support my strength and immunity.

I surround myself with people who will support me to continue to make positive choices, and continue to fine-tune my self awareness.

The Healing Diet is a live an online program, and the Spring program begins March 8.

  • Over the course of 10 weeks you’ll learn the core principles of Ayurveda and create a healing diet plan for yourself, and start to follow it.
  • You will learn about the principles of healing through diet, then apply them to your own body, week by week.
  • You will learn how to choose what foods will balance your individual constitution for now, through the seasons, and for the rest of your life.

And I’m not by any means a highly disciplined person.

The difference is who I surround myself with, and that I truly believe that change in our healthcare system begins with how I take care of myself.

I study a little bit everyday, and spend the time cooking for myself and constantly applying the principles over and over again. I pass on the most vital knowledge from Ayurveda, and my personal experiences of applying this knowledge to The Healing Diet program. I’m attracting people who are interested in eating right for their body type and eating with the seasons, and who are ready for a plan to follow that will improve their health.

So that is the focus for this Spring.

For The Healing Diet the focus is:

  1. Learn about your personal elemental makeup.
  2. Find your place in the larger picture of real wellness.
  3. Learn practical tools to digest better and have a stronger metabolism.
  4. Create and follow your own meal plan.
  5. Put it into action.
  6. Keep it in action.

Here is info on the Modules and all the dates and details.

Once you start learning this stuff, there’s no going back…you’ll see the principles in all parts of your life.  You’ll inevitably start helping your friends, your family, and if you’re a yoga teacher, your students.  Simple changes are not always easy – don’t go it alone. Join this supportive community.

I’m taking just 20 people into the Spring session of The Healing Diet, which begins March.  See if you’re a right fit and apply today.
